Ballpoint pens are the most common writing device used in modern times due to its simplistic and universal design. This style of writing has gained a large amount of popularity because of its interior liquid ink delivery system which is a large improvement from its predecessor, the dip pen. With most fountain pens there are two refilling options; a plunger-style device called a converter or a pre-filled device called a cartridge. From the reservoir, the ink is drawn through a feed to the nib and then to the paper via a combination of gravity and capillary action. Therefore, there is little pressure required to use this fine writing device.
 

A roller ball pen is a happy medium between the ball point and the fountain pen. It uses a liquid ink but looks similar to a ballpoint. Some people claim that there is little writing difference between a fine tip roller ball and a ball point pen. There is risk a of ink "dry out" with a roller ball, however as long as the pen is recapped drying out can be avoided. Roller ball pens are preferred over ball point pens by many people because feels less "scratchy" on the paper. By using liquid ink the pen glides on the paper much smoother than a ball point.
 

A mechanical pencil is an implement for writing or drawing in which the solid marking core (usually graphite based and called pencil lead, but colored pigments and other solid substances are also used) is not bonded to the outer casing, and is designed such that the core is to be extended as its point is worn away. Mechanical pencils are often designed and used to provide lines of constant thickness without requiring sharpening, making them well suited to applications like technical drawing and writing.
 

The fineliner is most uncommon delivery system among fine writing instruments. The fineliner has a felt tip which delivers a liquid ink onto the paper with a smooth gliding sensation. Most of the fineliner pens can be interchanged with a roller ball refill. The fine liner is a popular pen to use when signing documents due to its smooth delivery of liquid ink. When writing large amounts of text the fineliner is can lose consistency and has a tendency to sometimes smear. The versatility of a fineliner/roller ball writing instrument is the most popular selling point for this type of pen.
